Erma June Canfield- Bruns
June 28, 1925 - July 11, 2010





Erma “June” Canfield-Bruns, age 85, died on Sunday, July 11, 2010 in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, July 14, at First Reformed Church, in Sioux Falls. Visitation will begin at 3:00 PM on Tuesday at George Boom Funeral Home, Sioux Falls with the family present to greet friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Sioux Valley Nurses Alumni Association, or First Reformed Church Expansion Fund.

June was born on June 28, 1925 in Parker, SD to George and Gladys (Keller) Otten. She received her education in Parker graduating from Parker High School in 1943; she then went on to continue her education at Sioux Valley School of Nursing in Sioux Falls graduating in 1946. On May 2, 1947 she was united in marriage with Robert O. Canfield in Parker, SD. The couple made their home in Sioux Falls and raised three children. June worked as a nurse at Sioux Valley Hospital, at the offices of Dr. F. S. Stahmann and Obstetrics and Gynecology LTD, retiring in 1988. Her professional career included: being part of a team that administered the first penicillin shots and set up the first polio vaccination clinics in Sioux Falls. She was also involved in the establishment of the neonatal intensive care unit at Sioux Valley Hospital and gave the first Rhogam shot and amino intrauterine blood transfusions. She completed her Sioux Valley career in the coronary care unit. Robert died in 1972. On October 21, 1988 she was united in marriage with Jay V. Bruns in Sioux Falls, SD. The couple lived in George, IA and then Luverne, MN. Jay died in 2005. June moved back to Sioux Falls in 2005. June was a member of First Reformed Church in Sioux Falls, Sioux Valley Nurses Alumni, South Dakota Nurses Association, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Widowed Persons Services, T.H.E.O.S., Gideon Auxiliary, Luverne Community Hospital Auxiliary, and following her retirement in 1988 she enjoyed volunteering.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Larry Canfield and his wife Mary of Sioux Falls, SD, Edna Woodworth and her husband, Greg of Rochester, MN and Todd Canfield and his wife Michelle of Tea, SD; step children, Robert Bruns and his wife Karol of Garden Ridge, TX and Mary Bruns of Waukesha, WI; one brother, Robert Otten and his wife, Lu of Sioux Falls, SD 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many trusted friends and extended family.

She is preceded in death by her parents, George and Gladys Otten; both husbands, Robert Canfield and Jay Bruns; two brothers, Kenneth and Edward Otten; and one sister, Annabelle Otten.
