Billy B. Tyler
January 8, 1924 - August 4, 2017





Billy Burr Tyler, 93 of Sioux Falls died on August 4th, 2017. He was born January 8th, 1924 to Cleo and Ernest S. Tyler in Crooks, SD.

Bill grew up on the Tyler family farm near Crooks and graduated from Lyons High School before entering college at South Dakota State in 1942. His South Dakota State College education was delayed while serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific. Bill was aboard the USS Braxton; the first troop transport to land on Japan in 1944.

Bill returned to South Dakota State College completing his BS degree in Animal Husbandry in 1950. While at State he met his wife Ruth Tjaden. Bill and Ruth were married for 47 years before Ruth’s death in 1998.

Bill farmed near Crooks SD, taught Veteran Farm Training, and worked for the J.I. Case company until he joined the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance company in 1960. During his 35-year career with NML he was an active member of the Sioux Falls Life Underwriters and served one term as the organization President.

February 8th, 2000, he married Grace Richmond Plath.

Bill was an avid Jackrabbit fan his entire life, and played cornet in marching band while at State. Hunting and fishing in his beloved state of South Dakota filled countless weekends enjoying the outdoors and eating the catch. Bill was a skilled and insatiable woodworker, producing furniture for family and bowls for sale at local art shows. At the age of 80 he traveled to Provo, UT for advanced wood turning training.

Bill is survived by his wife of 17 years Grace; three children, Renae (Gary Mack) of Watertown, SD, Todd (Laura) of Lake City, FL, and Kim (Joe Walker) of Sioux Falls, SD; 7 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; 3 step-children, Shelley (George) Williams of Sioux Falls, SD, Kirk (Kim) Plath of Castle Pines, CO and Scott (Missy) Plath of Yankton, SD; brother, Ernest Tyler of Sioux Falls, SD and sister, Jessie Tschetter of Spearfish, SD.

He is preceded in death by wife Ruth, his parents, siblings Faye Tyler Wade, Clyde Tyler and granddaughter Emily Tyler.
