Dewey Lester Bakken Jr. was born on February 26, 1939 in Tacoma, WA to Dewey Sr. and Lillian M. (Hansen) Bakken. At the age of 5 his family made their home on a farm in Hamlin Co. and later in the Arlington, SD area. While attending high school in Arlington, Dewey met and fell in love with Donna Carsrud. Following Dewey’s high school graduation in 1957, he enlisted and honorably served in the United States Marine Corps for three years.

Dewey and Donna were united in marriage on September 12, 1959 in Badger, SD. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Oceanside, CA while Dewey finished his Marine Corps service. In 1960 Dewey and Donna made their home Sioux Falls, SD.

Dewey and Donna were blessed with four children, Donnita, Dawn, Darla and Darren.

Dewey worked for Sunshine Food Markets for over 40-years retiring in 2004. In 1974 the family moved from Sioux Falls to a farm near Colton, SD where they made their home until moving to the “Ranch” near Renner, SD in 1991.

Dewey was also blessed with an entrepreneurial spirit and an optimistic attitude. In his retirement years he enjoyed trading stocks. He was a “Mr. Fix it” and loved farming, working on motors/tractors and spending time outdoors fishing, hunting and trapping. Above all he loved spending time with his family, in their younger years taking the family camping, fishing and waterskiing. Dewey was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend who will be deeply missed.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 58-years, Donna Bakken of Renner, SD; four children: Donnita (Dave) Huber of Armour, SD, Dawn (Kim) Waugh of Sioux Falls, SD, Darla (Nizam) Qassem of Omaha, NE and Darren Bakken of Hartford, SD; 9 grandchildren: Amber Nepodal, Heidi (Dan) Freemark, Matthew Nepodal, Rachel (Matt) Donker, Lacey (Zac) Vekovius, Nathan Huber, Cody Waugh, Hani Qassem and Adam Qassem; 11 great grandchildren: Collin, Charlotte “Charlie”, Tristin, Graysen, Hudsen, Cole, Lane, Theodore “Teddy”, Holly, Ameerah and Aksel; three sisters: Carol (Al) Schroeder of Tea, SD, Gayle (Dale) Gerry of Yuma, AZ and Roxy Taglioli of Yuma, AZ; and a host of other relatives and friends.
