Merlyn D. Duba
February 7, 1932 - November 28, 2017

Merl D. Duba age 85, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 28, 2017, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls surrounded by loving family. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in July 2017, had surgery August 2 and fought hard to recover and return home. Every day his positive attitude uplifted family, Touchmark family and medical staff.

Merl was born in Western, NE on February 7, 1932, his father’s name was Henry Duba and his mother’s name was Frances Maas. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Maxine Vyhnalek on November 23, 1952, in Crete, NE. Merl and Maxine celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year.

Merl graduated from Crete High School in 1950 and he enlisted in the US Navy in 1950 in Lincoln, NE. He served in the Korean War from 1950-1954 with the rank of Navy Aviation Boatswain, Mate 2nd Class on the USS Boxer. He was discharged from the US Navy in 1954 at Treasure Island, CA. He attended Arlington State College (part of Texas A&M) and graduated 1956 with Phi Beta Kappa National Honors. He was employed in Corpus Christi, TX and later accepted a position with General Mills and retired after 33 years of employment.

Merl was an active member in the Sioux Falls community and was also a passionate member of First United Methodist Church, Trinity Lodge 200 (Past Master) where he received his 50-year pin, El Riad Shrine – Classic Cars, Circus Committee, Road Runner’s, Provost and Legion of Honor (Past Commander), Cosmopolitans (CDF International Board), Salvation Army Board and Masonic Building Association Board. His charity work came from his heart and he taught his family and friends that charity begins at home but does not end there. We will al miss his laughter and the smile he had for all of us. He passed his heart warming values on to his family all of who will miss him. Many have commented that Merl was “one of a kind” and a friend to all.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Maxine; three children, son-Dan and his children, Amy and Allison (Denver, CO) and Andrew (Minneapolis, MN), daughter, Denise Schoolmeester (Sioux Falls) her children, Brett and wife, Nicole, their children, Katie, Kennedi and Beckett (Tea, SD), Brittany and husband, Colin, their children, Axel, Ryker, and Weston (Marion, SD), Michael (Sioux Falls), Eric (CT), son – Tom and his wife, Kathy (Bentonville, AR), their children, Matt and fiancé, Lauren, (Rogers, AR) Ryan (Minneapolis, MN). Two sisters, Eleanor (Loren) of Crete, NE and Doris (Larry) of Denton, NE. Brother-in-law, Don (Roz) of Fairmount, IN; along with cousins, nephews, nieces and closer friends. There was not a family sporting, musical, play or other event without Grandpa Duba in the audience cheering us on.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and two brothers (Harvey and Kenneth).
