February 22, 1933 - December 17, 2017

Bernard “Bernie” Dykstra, age 84, died Sunday, December 17, 2017 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.

Bernie was born on February 22, 1933 in Armour, SD to Henry and Gertie (Bolt) Dykstra. He was raised on the family farm near New Holland, SD. In 1953 Bernie joined the United States Army and honorably served our country in Korea.

Bernie was united in marriage with Doris Mae Vanden Hoek on September 8, 1955 at the Harrison Reformed Church in Harrison, SD. They farmed near New Holland, SD for eight years. As Bernie and Doris were blessed with eight children, the family lived in the communities of Colton, SD, Stickney, SD, and Luverne, MN while Bernie worked as a truck driver. He also began working part-time as a custodian alongside Doris. In 1972, the couple made their home in Sioux Falls, SD where they worked as custodians for American Freight Company and Linwood Wesleyan Church. Doris passed away on February 20, 2006.

Bernie was an active member of Linwood Wesleyan Church. He loved his Church family and was currently working as a custodian in the church two times a week. He enjoyed listening to music, camping, traveling and keeping up-to-date with the political issues in Washington D.C. Above all, Bernie loved spending time with his family; especially having coffee with family and friends. Bernie was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend who will be deeply missed.
