Sigmund R. "Sig" Elle
April 23, 1930 - December 16, 2017

Sigmund “Sig” R. Elle, age 87, of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at the Golden Living Center – Covington Heights in Sioux Falls, SD surrounded by his family.

On January 18, 1949, Sigmund immigrated to the United States from Sauda, Norway, at the young age of 19 years old, immediately enlisting in the United States Army, proudly serving as a Private First Class with an Artillery Regiment in the Korean War until his honorable discharge in 1953. After meeting the love of his life, Marjorie (Hanson) Elle, the two wed in Luverne, MN, on March 18, 1952 and would begin their family in 1954, having five girls and one son. Within a year he would become a naturalized citizen in 1955, but would never lose his true roots in Norway where his sisters and brother remained, having returned for visits several times, the latest being after his retirement. Sigmund had attended Nettleton Business School and would settle into a career spanning over 50 years with J.L. Healy Construction, current day Diesel Machinery Incorporated (D.M.I.), as the Parts Manager and Time Keeper, being known for making deliveries in his ‘Healy green’ or white D.M.I. Ford Ranchero. When Sigmund was not working, he enjoyed time with Marjorie up until her death in 2009, going for brats and a ‘MGD’ with his son Skip at the ‘south office’ (his beloved VFW, where he was very involved); an avid football and baseball fan, he would always be sure to watch his Twins and Vikings and is still hopeful they can pull off a championship. Although not a man of many words, he enjoyed spending time around family who always enjoyed his presence, typically at grandma and grandpa’s house for holidays, a grill out to celebrate birthdays or just because.

Grateful for sharing Sigmund’s life are his children; daughters, Lori Clark of Sioux Falls, SD, Jodi (John) Schuldt of Fort Atkinson, WI, Susan (Dennis) Lower of Sioux Falls, SD, Becky (Randy) Bamsey of Des Moines, IA, Randi LeMoine of Pensacola, FL; son, Sigmund “Skip” Elle Jr. of Sioux Falls, SD; sisters Kjellaug Westbo of Sauda, Norway, Magnhild (Magne) Nes of Bergen, Norway; ten grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Sigmund was preceded in death by, wife, Marjorie Elle on May 27, 2009; parents, Jacob and Svanhild Elle; and brother, Ole Elle.

A special thanks to Austin and Molly from the V.A. Hospital for the exceptional care they provided to Sigmund in his final years allowing us the ability to keep him at home up until just 8 months ago. Another special thanks to the caring staff at Edgewood Vista Senior Living - Memory Care facility for the safe environment and tender care they provided these past 8 months, allowing our family to worry just a little less about his safety and health.

Memorials may be directed to the family to choose where to distribute them or directly to the Alzheimer’s Association South Dakota Chapter
