Maxine M. Duba
May 22, 1932 - December 28, 2017

Maxine Mae (Vyhnalek) Duba, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend passed away peacefully on December 28, 2017. She had her family by her side.

Maxine was born May 22, 1932, in Crete, NE. Oldest child of Tom and Edith (Houser) Vyhnalek. She attended Crete High School and graduated in 1950. She worked for the University of Nebraska (taking numerous courses) and Russell Stover Candies.

She married her high school sweetheart, Merl Duba (US Navy), November 23, 1952. They lived in San Francisco and San Diego. They later moved to Arlington, TX where Merl attended college. To this union three children were born; Dan, Denise and Tom. They lived in Corpus Cristi, TX and later moved to Sioux City, IA and then to Sioux Falls, SD in 1962 where they continued to live.

Maxine belonged to numerous organizations: ESA, Toastmistress, CF PEO, Welcome Wagon, Sojourners, Symphony Board, Elmwood Golf (Chairperson 1999-2000), Shrine Auxiliary, Rep to Twin Cities Hospital (8 years), SD Mrs. SD Pageant. One of Maxine’s favorite projects was the Elmwood Golf Caddie Shack theme, which brought such fun to the group. Maxine had a creative flare for everything she did.

Maxine was manager of Russell Stover Candies in the Western Mall for 10 years, Akers China and Gifts, and Dayton’s (now Macy’s).

She was advocate of her children’s activities at school and college and also with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was neve happier than being on the side line cheering them on.

Maxine and Merl wintered in California and Florida for 19 years before her health prevented her from continuing. These years were shared by her brother, Don and his wife, Roz from Indiana.

Merl and Max were very excited to move to Touchmark in 2017 and made many friends with residents and staff.

She loved hosting others for special occasions and family gatherings, playing bridge, Mahjongg with her dear friends and she enjoyed scrapbooking, needlepoint and playing golf with family and friends.

She was the heart and tender spirit of her family and will be dearly missed by both her family and friends. It is a joy and comfort knowing that she is resting and at peace now.

Those left to cherish her memory are her three children, Dan and his children, Amy and Allison (Denver, CO) and Andrew (Minneapolis, MN), daughter, Denise Schoolmeester (Sioux Falls) her children, Brett and wife, Nicole, their children, Katie, Kennedi and Beckett (Tea, SD), Brittany and husband, Colin, their children, Axel, Ryker, and Weston (Marion, SD), Michael (Sioux Falls), Eric (CT), son – Tom and his wife, Kathy (Bentonville, AR), their children, Matt and fiancé, Lauren, (Rogers, AR) Ryan (Minneapolis, MN); brother, Don and his wife, Roz (Fairmount, IN), along with cousins, nephews, nieces and close friends. There was not a family sporting, musical, play or other event without Grandma Maxine in the audience cheering us on.

She was preceded in death by her husband Merl, parents, grandparents and sister, Betty Jean Hilliard.

Memorials may be sent to the Salvation Army, South Dakota Symphony or the El Riad Shrine Auxiliary.
